speaking of wittig -
i’m really weirded out by this post on the feminist_lite lj?
while wittig said some busted things in her time, i seriously think she is one of the few cis feminists i can name who (at times) theorized bodies in a way approaching anti-cissexist
like, i can’t find my copy of saint foucault homos but somewhere in there halperin bersani is talking about this lecture given by wittig where she was talking about refusing ‘straight’ definitions of her body and some douchbag in the audience demands that she tell them whether or not she has a vagina
and she answers that she doesn’t
and, like, me too, right?
while she had a lot of cis privilege and safety in that situation and others, the fact that some jerk demanded that kind of question of her illustraits for me that she put her body/theory on the line in a way that a lot of cis feminists just don’t - and that a lot of trans people don’t have the option to refuse
i don’t think she ever wrote anything at all on trans people at all, which might be a fucked up and cis privileged omission but is not at all the same as outright hatefulness
and there also seems to be this weird collapsing at feminist_lite of all lesbian feminist thought into a blend of andrea dworkin, catherine mckinnon, mary daly, and dirtywhiteboi? which is ridicules
it’s like saying that sandy stone, julia serano, voz_latina, and kate bornstein all have the exact same concept about what gender and womanhood and feminism and sexuality etc mean
when in actuality they are all very different thinkers, though they might have a few common points of agreement
i mean, i for sure know some lesbian feminists who i like a whole lot and who don’t have totally busted politics
(and some of whom are trans women)
like, my old boss was a older lesbian feminist and she was really cool about a lot of things, including trans things - she fucked up a few times but not any more that the more queer or gay IDed cis people around me, you know?
the only time that i can remember her saying something fucked up to me personally, she realized what she said was wrong and appologised to me of her own volition, without me or anyone calling her out at all, which is more than i can say for a lot of feminist or queer or even other trans people
so
yeah
